How to Dress for Whitewater Kayaking

You slip over the rapid's edge and plunge into a big boiling hole of white crashing foam, only to be spit out over another screaming top of water as you weave your way through gurgling rapids. White water kayaking is a challenging sport that invigorates your mind, body and soul. However, you can't just hop in your kayak without first dressing in preparation for the river.

Instructions

Layer your torso for protection. Wear synthetic fabrics, instead of cotton. Begin the layering from the inside out with fast drying nylon underwear. Wear a thermal underwear shirt and another shirt as an insulating layer over your arms and chest. The outer layer should be a dry suit jacket and pants. It should be waterproof and breathable. On really cold rivers, add another insulating layer.

Protect your head. In cold water, wear a neoprene hood. It must have a chin strap or you will lose it during immersion. A plus is to buy one that has ear flaps. Always wear a helmet. There are many varieties to choose from, some with added visor protection against the sun. Most white water helmets are shaped to slice into the water during falls with easier impact.

Keep your feet safe and comfortable. You'll need shoes that won't be pulled off in rushing water. In warm water, wear something that drains and can handle getting wet. Solid water shoes or sandals are great. In cold water, consider wearing knee-high mukluks and synthetic socks.

Wear a kayaking life vest. Find one that is not bulky and is comfortable for leaning back in your boat. It should have a ventilated back panel and larger openings at the arms for paddling and rowing movement.

    • 5

Dress as if you are going to get wet. Expect to be completely immersed. Wear the life vest fastened. Carry a whistle and navigation light in the vest's pockets.

Bring a change of clothes in a waterproof bag. Carry a hot beverage and high-calorie snack to avoid hypothermia.
