What to Do If Caught in an Avalanche
-
Features
-
An avalanche refers to the sudden flow of a mass of snow down a slope. Avalanches release up to 300,000 cubic yards of snow, according to NSIDC. Most avalanches in the United States occur in Western states, especially Colorado.
Solution
-
If you get caught in an avalanche, yell and drop your ski poles and pack. Try to "swim" near the surface of the snow. Once you stop, immediately punch the snow in front of you to create an air pocket. Stick an arm or leg out, if you can. Stay calm and keep your breathing steady.
Considerations
-
Wearing an avalanche beacon, or small transmitting device, can help rescuers find you in an avalanche. Make sure your beacon is set to "transmit," not "receive," before you begin your activity.
