1
Measure the log for the lengths you want each piece bucked into. Mark the measurement by chipping a spot out of the bark with the ax.
-
2
Hold the ax handle in both hands at the end of the handle. Set the ax head on the mark and step back so you are standing the length of the ax away from the log.
-
3
Spread your feet so they are even with your shoulders and you are well balanced. Lift the ax head off the log, bring it back over your shoulder and swing down hard hitting the mark with the sharp edge of the ax.
-
4
Cut into the log at a slight angle with the ax edge leaning toward the mark. Cut first on the one side of the mark and then on the opposite side of the mark cutting out a wedge of wood with each stroke. The cut out should be narrow, no more than 3 inches at the widest part at the top as you cut deeper into the log.
-
5
Cut halfway through the log and then roll the log over and begin cutting on the opposite side. Continue cutting until you reach the cut from the opposite side, when the two cuts meet the log will be cut through.
