Wilderness First-Aid Training

Wilderness first-aid training is available at many colleges and institutes nationwide on several levels. There is not yet one specific standard certification. However, there are several boards and organizations trusted for their curriculum and training.
  1. Wilderness First-Aid Certification

    • Basic Wilderness First Aid consists of 16 to 24 hours of training. Check to see which government entities and other organizations recognize a certification prior to registering for training.

    Advanced Wilderness First Aid

    • Advanced Wilderness First Aid consists of 30 hours of training, and provides a more in-depth knowledge of wilderness first-aid skills.

    Wilderness First Responder

    • A Wilderness First Responder certification requires 80 hours of training, and represents a higher-level certification than a Wilderness First Aid certification.

    Wilderness EMT

    • A Wilderness EMT (emergency medical technician) certification is the highest level of wilderness medical training. Certification requires 180 hours of training.

    Schools and Classes

    • There are several schools in the United States dedicated to wilderness and similar medical training, including the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Center for Wilderness Safety (CWS) and the American Red Cross.
