How to Find Your Way If Lost in a Forest

Hiking, backpacking and other wilderness recreation creates lasting memories for individuals and families alike. Getting lost in the forest is a memory no one wants, though. When trekking through the growth of a forest, getting lost can be a concern if you aren't careful. With a few precautions before leaving home and some quick thinking on the trail, you can find your way if you do get lost.

      Stay calm. Stay right where you are until you are over the panic and can think clearly. It is very tempting to wander about in a panic but that only wastes energy and may get you more lost.

      Figure out how much daylight is left. If it is late in the day, find shelter, build a fire and proceed to Step 3 in the morning. Do not try to find your way in the dark. If it is earlier and you have enough daylight, proceed to Step 3.

      Consult your compass and map. Try to remember landmarks and which direction the trail or other safety is. Head in that direction based on an accurate reading of the compass and map.

      Leave markers, such as a piece of cloth tied to a branch, for searchers to follow. This will also help you know if you end up going in circles.

      Keep energized, hydrated and calm.
