How to Orient a Map Using a Compass

Navigation through unfamiliar terrain can be difficult without the appropriate tools and skills. Knowing how to orient a map using a compass is essential for wilderness navigation. With a few basic instructions, just about anyone can navigate with these tools.

      Lay out the map on a flat surface, away from any metal objects that could disrupt the compass. Place the compass on the bottom edge of the map.

      Wait until the magnetized needle of the compass stops wobbling and is pointing in a steady direction. The compass should now point north.

      Turn the map, leaving the compass in place until the key for north on the map and the compass needle are aligned. You will now be facing north while looking at the map.

      Observe the features of the landscape in relation to the landmarks and features of the map. You should notice the mapped landmarks in front of you. Details of landscape features will vary on maps.
