Look for a pond or other quiet body of water. Hackberry trees thrive in areas like this, although they are known for their drought resistance, and are tolerant to various climates and moisture levels.

Find a tree with long, pointed leaves with serrated margins. The trees can grow to be 80 feet tall, and have smooth, gray bark that roughens with maturity. The wood of the hackberry tree is soft and yellowish in color.

Collect the berries when they are ripe. Hackberries are small, round berries that turn from orange to purple as they mature. As they begin to dry and fall from the tree, they will be sweet to the taste.
