F1 Diffuser Advantages
-
Increased Speed
-
The purpose of just about any piece of equipment on a Formula One race car is to increase its speed, and the diffuser is no exception. A diffuser increases a car's speed by improving its aerodynamics and giving it a better grip on the road.
Increased Downforce
-
More downforce equals more speed, and the diffuser is an important part of that equation. A diffuser creates negative pressure, which accelerates the air under the car. This puts the entire underside of the car under negative air pressure, creating a vacuum-like effect under the car. The car is then basically sucked toward the ground, creating downforce. The car then "grips" the track, even when going around curves at high speeds.
Reduced Drag
-
The diffuser also provides more efficient airflow, reducing air resistance, or drag, and making the race car more aerodynamic. High-speed air rushing under the car is "gathered up" under the car, where it decelerates and expands, reducing air resistance and causing the car to accelerate.
