How to Decipher NASCAR Lingo

NASCAR seems to have a language all its own. Especially if you're a new fan of the sport, the sheer number of terms can feel overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you understand, learn and use lingo like a veteran fan.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a good glossary of NASCAR terms. There are a handful of thorough glossaries online that are free and easy to use. If you want to look something up on the go, print the glossary, fold up the pages and keep them stored in your purse or bag.

    • 2

Ask other fans what unfamiliar terms mean. This might earn you a few jeers or jibes, but there's no better way to learn the lingo than by having an experienced enthusiast explain what it means.

    • 3

Know that each of the specialized terms falls under some major category of racing knowledge. For example, the terms "restrictor plate," "firewall" and "stickers" all refer to parts of the car. Other categories of terms might include driver behavior, track conditions and the pit crew.

    • 4

Watch as many races as you can and learn how the lingo is used in context. The "Hat Dance" doesn't make much sense if you expect it to be part of the race, but once you see the drivers trying on baseball caps afterward it does.

Use the lingo as much as possible once you've learned it. This will reinforce your memory and make you less dependent on your glossary or friends.
