How to Make Homemade Lakers Decorations

The Los Angeles Lakers are a basketball team competing in the National Basketball Association holding numerous championships and a large handful of Basketball Hall of Fame Inductees. Originally located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the team relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s after being purchased by Jack Kent Cooke. Many avid followers of the LA Lakers have used the purple and gold to decorate their bedroom spaces, themed parties and sports-themed garages with pennants, banners and Lakers' jerseys. Create your own banner to adorn your home with a few supplies from the craft store and some Laker spirit.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a LA Lakers logo coloring sheet from a site such as "Coloring Pages Book For Kids Boys" using the Internet and print the logo onto a piece of printer paper for a reference.

    • 2

Sketch an enlarged, 12-inch high replica of the word "Lakers" using the font demonstrated on the printed reference logo onto purple felt using a white colored pencil. Cut each of the letters out using a pair of sharp scissors.

    • 3

Unfold the yellow felt and lay it on your work surface. Cut 1/4 of a yard of felt from the piece, leaving a 1/2 yard of fabric remaining for the banner background.

    • 4

Sketch a perfect circle with a diameter of 12 inches onto the 1/4 yard piece of the yellow felt with a pencil. Use a compass or a large inverted mixing bowl to trace if you do not feel comfortable sketching a perfect circle. Cut it out using scissors.

    • 5

Draw lines replicating those on a basketball with a pencil and color over them with a purple fabric paint pen. Allow the paint to dry according to package directions: approximately one hour until it's usable, but potentially 72 hours until its able to be wet or washed.

    • 6

Draw the word "Lakers" using the same font but in a smaller, 6-inch high size onto the scrap pieces of purple felt. Sketch "Los Angeles" onto the remaining fabric in 1-inch letters. Trim the fabric on the pencil marks and set the smaller letters aside.

    • 7

Lay the white felt onto your work surface and place the yellow basketball approximately 4-inches from the fabric's corner and strategically place the smaller letters from the word "Lakers" over the basketball. Above the word "Lakers," place the letters from "Los Angeles" as shown by the printed logo.

    • 8

Adhere the letters and the basketball in place after the position of each is very similar to that shown on the logo. Create short 1/2 to 1-1/2-inch lines extending to the left of the letters in "Lakers" with the purple fabric paint pen in accordance with the logo. Allow the paint and glue to dry for 1 hour or until the paint does not come off when touched.

    • 9

Trim the white felt approximately 1/2 inch around the extended lines, the letters and the basketball with sharp scissors and position the basketball and the 12-inch "Lakers" letters on the 1/2 yard piece of yellow felt. Place the basketball to the left side of the banner and the purple letters to the right.

    • 10

Adhere the letters and the basketball to the yellow felt banner with fabric glue and allow the entire piece to dry for 72 hours or according to glue directions. Hang the banner with tacks in each of the corners and the center of the two long banner sides.
