Schedule of Games for the College World Series in Omaha

The College World Series is contested every June in Omaha, Nebraska. Teams begin playing the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament early in the month, with the second half of June reserved for the finals in Omaha. While a game occasionally may be rescheduled, the format of the tournament and base schedule remains the same from season to season.
  1. Qualifying

    • While the NCAA Division I College World Series in Omaha features eight schools, 64 teams qualify for the NCAA tournament. Teams compete in 16 four-team double-elimination regionals hosted by the highest ranked team in each group. The 16 winners advance to the super regional round in which the remaining teams are paired off in a best-of-three series at the stadium of the higher ranked team. The eight super regional winners earn a trip to Omaha.

    First Eliminations

    • The eight teams in the College World Series are separated into two groups of four teams. On the opening day of the tournament, the teams in the first group square off; teams in the second group play on day two. Day three sees the first group in action again. The two winners from the first day face off, and the two losers play, with the loser of this game eliminated. The second group returns for the fourth day with the same format, eliminating one team and leaving six in the tournament at the end of the day.

    Group Finals

    • With three teams remaining in each group -- one undefeated team and a pair of 1-1 teams -- the groups begin playing toward a champion. The fifth and sixth day of the College World Series pairs the 1-1 teams from the first group and the 1-1 teams from the second group. The winners remain to take on the undefeated team from their group on the seventh day of the event, while the losers are eliminated. If an undefeated team beats the remaining team in its group on the seventh day, it advances to the championship series. A loss by an undefeated team on the seventh day sets up a loser-goes-home rematch the next day.

    Championship Series

    • After each group champion has been determined, the squads receive a one-day rest, or two days for a team that went undefeated in group play. The championship series is a best-of-three, played on three consecutive days.
