How to Lubricate a Rubik's Cube

The Rubik's Cube is one of the best selling toys in puzzle history, providing a ground for the invention of many algorithms and problem solvers, and allowing the talented and intelligent to stretch their brains.

The toy spawned an entire subculture of Rubik's solvers who compete for the best solve time. These "speedcubers" use special lubricants on their Rubik's cubes so that they spin fast and effortlessly. Get quicker at solving your cube by lubricating your Rubik's cube at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn one side of the Rubik's cube 45 degrees, that is, so that the corners stick out evenly from the rest of the cube on all four sides.

    • 2

Carefully, pry the center piece out of the top layer of the Rubik's cube using a screwdriver. Be careful that the piece does not break. Just be gentle, and you shouldn't have any issues. Set the piece aside, but keep it handy, as it will be put back in place shortly.

    • 3

Using a spray lubricant that is silicone-based (any other kind will destroy your Rubik's cube because of the type of plastic it is made of) spray the inside of the cube liberally.

    • 4

Pop the center piece back onto your Rubik's cube and spin the pieces around quickly for five minutes. This will spread the lubricant around the inside of the Rubik's cube, allowing it to spin quickly and more freely.

Wipe off any excess lubricant with a lint-free towel or cloth and get solving!
