Team Roping: How to Throw a Lot of Rope Heading

A team roper must throw a long loop if their horse is slow or the steer is fast. A deep box or a long breaking barrier are two more reasons. There are several options for throwing a lot of rope. A long rope, a big loop, large coils and dropping those coils are means of throwing a lot of rope.

Instructions

Use a big loop. The bigger the loop, the more rope you throw. Start in the box with a big loop and swing it as you come out of the box as you track the steer; or start with a small loop and feed the loop as you begin swinging. Feed the loop by relaxing your hand as you swing the rope. The centrifugal force of the swing feeds the size of the loop.

Hold big coils in your off-hand. Small coils are about one foot in diameter. A two or two-and-a-half foot coil is a big coil. Drop a coil -- or several -- when you throw your loop. Coils stretch out and feeds the length of the rope when you throw the loop. The more coils you drop -- and the larger the coils -- the more rope you will throw.

Use a long rope. The longer the rope, the larger loop potential, the larger the coil potential and the more you can release from your off-side hand. A 29-foot rope is relatively short for team roping. A 37-foot rope is a long rope. The longer the rope, the longer the throw.
