1
Purchase the equipment necessary for team roping. Purchase a rope, horse, tow vehicle, horse trailer, saddle, saddle pad and tack. Invest in the rope first if you are on a budget and develop roping skills before investing in the more expensive equipment.
-
2
Build practice targets to develop roping skills. Drive posts into the ground, and practice roping the posts until you develop consistent accuracy.
-
3
Join a local roping or rodeo club. Fill out the local membership information, and apply for membership to the national association that is appropriate for your age group. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association is the most common club requirement for entering rodeos and gaining qualification points for the national circuit.
-
4
Network with the local rodeo clubs until you locate a partner for team roping. Determine who will be the header and who will be the heeler. Find a practice arena with steers, and practice on still targets. Practice on a regular basis to develop timing and rope the head and hind legs of the steer in several seconds.
-
5
Enter local rodeos to test your skills, and build a travel schedule to expand the range of your competition as your skills improve.
