1
Grip the javelin. There are three standard gripping forms. The one you choose should be based on comfort. The American style requires you to hold the cord between your thumb and index fingers. Finnish style requires a grip using the thumb and middle finger, while the fork style uses the index and middle fingers to grip. Regardless of the grip, rest the javelin in the palm of your hand and turn your palm upwards. Carry the javelin above the level of your shoulders and head.

Begin your run. Hold the javelin high above your shoulders, parallel to the ground with the tip angled slightly downward. Maintain this position throughout your approach.

3
Begin the crossover. This maneuver helps your body build momentum that is needed to throw the javelin. It begins on your last five steps, and is known as the "rhythm of five." When you land on your right foot, turn your body so that the left side is angled toward your target. At the same time, start to draw your arm back in a throwing motion until it is fully outstretched. By the end of the five steps, your javelin should be near your head, with the point at the same height as your eyebrows.

4
Push off with your left leg for the final two steps and throw. As your right foot hits the ground, you should raise your heel so that you finish the throwing motion on your toes. At the same time, bring your left foot forward and release the javelin. As you release, rotate your throwing hand so that the thumb is pointing downward.
