How to Tie the Calf's Legs in Calf Roping

Calf roping or tie-down roping is an important skill if you are a ranch hand or compete in rodeos. Tying the calf enables the rancher to brand the animal, inspect it or treat it for diseases. During competitions, the cowboy and his horse must race against the clock during a calf-roping event. After he lassos the calf, it must remain standing until he reaches the animal. If not, he must wait until the calf stands up again, thus losing valuable time. This skill takes practice, strength, quickness and precise motions.

Instructions

    • 1

Dismount your horse after lassoing the calf and run to it quickly while keeping a firm grip on the lasso.

    • 2

Sweep your dominant arm under the calf's body to cause it to fall down. This is called "flanking the calf."

    • 3

Hold the calf down with your non-dominant arm. Grasp three of the calf's legs together and quickly wrap the pigging rope or lariat around the legs near the calf's feet by weaving it through the different legs. Do this three times.

    • 4

Push the rope end under the loops you made and pull it tightly to cinch it, creating a half-hitch knot. This prevents the calf from kicking the rope free.

    • 5

Raise your arms straight up into the air if you are in a rodeo event. This signals to the judges that your task is complete.
