Facts About Firestone Tires at Indy

Firestone tires and the Indy 500 have had a long relationship dating from the first race to the present. Over the past 100 years, as Firestone grew and the Indy 500 gained in popularity, the two histories have been intertwined into one winning tradition.
  1. Firestone Tires First Indy 500 Win

    • Firestone began its record-breaking number of wins at the Indy 500 back in 1911 when Ray Harroun won the first Indy 500 race.

    More Firestone Wins At Indy

    • The first two-time winner of the Indy 500 was Tommy Milton in 1923. He drove on Firestone tires. In 1948, Marui Rose won the Indy 500--Firestone's 25th consecutive win at the brick yard.

    Return to Racing

    • Firestone took a 20-year break from producing Indy car tires but made its return in 1993. The news conference was held in Indianapolis, just outside the Motor Speedway.

    Fifty Wins for Firestone

    • Aire Luyendyk became the 50th Indy 500 winner to use Firestone tires. This meant Firestone had more Indy 500 winners than all other tire companies combined.

    Making it Official

    • The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced in 2001 that Firestone would be the official tire supplier for the Indy 500 for at least five years.

    The Firestone Firehawk

    • Firestone developed Firestone Firehawk tires in 2002. They are the only street tires allowed to carry the Indy 500 logo.
