Motivating Poster
-
There is something profound about seeing your favorite athlete achieving the impossible, especially if you see it everyday on a large poster plastered on your bedroom wall, with an inspirational quote written at the bottom to remind you that the impossible can be achieved.
If your young athlete feels like giving up, give him a poster of seven-time Tour De France champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, with the words "Hope Rides Again." This will encourage him to stop feeling defeated, work harder and beat the odds.
Autographed Item
-
Autographs make otherwise mass-produced merchandise more personal. When a professional athlete you admire writes his name and sometimes a message on something you own, you not only feel closer to the athlete but also inspired.
If your young athlete loves baseball, then give him a ball or bat signed by his favorite player. Knowing that someone he looks up to took the time and personally put his signature on the ball or bat makes your young athlete want to be as successful as he is.
Extra Training Session
-
If your young athlete lacks the skill and talent but loves the game, help him get better by giving him extra training. If he aspires to become a football player but doesn't have a muscular physique, then purchase him a round of sessions with a personal trainer who knows how to bulk him up. If he desires to become soccer star but carries a little extra weight to run around the field with stamina, then hire a nutritionist who can slim him down healthily. Other trainers who specialize in particular sports also exist and provide individualized attention and focused guidance to improve a young athlete's skills.
Inspiring Sports Movies
-
Sometimes a young athlete needs to watch other stories of success to cope with his own struggles. Seeing others' difficulties, hard work and triumphs --- even if some of them are fictional --- helps him identify with the heroes in these stories and makes him feel not as isolated.
Inspiring movies include: "Field of Dreams," where a broke Iowa farmer sacrifices personal gain to build a magical baseball diamond where dreams come true; "Rudy," where a young boy beat all odds to star in the Notre Dame football team and scored a touchdown in an important game; and "The Blind Side," where an inner-city homeless kid gets adopted by a suburban housewife and becomes an NFL player.
