Moose Hunting in Flaming Gorge, Wyoming

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, spanning 200,000 acres, is located within the Ashley National Forest that straddles the Utah-Wyoming border. In this recreational area, moose hunting is permitted, though it's more limited than hunting of other types of game.
  1. Parameters and Common Game

    • Hunting is permitted only within the boundaries of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The most heavily hunted animals are deer and elk. Moose, mountain lions, antelope, ducks and geese are less abundant. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, bear and cougar are even more rare and require an additional hunting permit.

    Licenses and Permits

    • Proper permits and licenses must be obtained before attempting to hunt moose.

Because Flaming Gorge spans Wyoming and Utah, permits and licenses are subject to the regulations of both states. Moose-specific hunting permit applications in Wyoming can be submitted starting Jan. 1 of each year. In Utah, hunters must have a Utah hunting or combination license to apply for or obtain a Utah hunting permit.

    General Tips

    • Information on area-specific hunting regulations can be obtained by calling a number of government offices.

Make sure when hunting for moose that you are using permissible hunting equipment. You can check this and other hunting rules and regulations by contacting the supervisor's office at Ashley National Park, or by contacting the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, or the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, depending on where you'll be (see Resources).
