What Lures Do Sturgeon Fish Like?

Sturgeon can provide a fisherman with the catch of a lifetime. Those anglers who are lucky enough to make a trip to Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Canada or Alaska to go fishing for sturgeon will find themselves in a fight with some of the most active fish in the area. Sturgeon can grow to be 1,000 pounds, and the average size is somewhere between 50 and 100 pounds. They are great fighters, and unlike many fish that feed on bottom species, they are usually great eating.

  1. Shad

    • Sturgeon are voracious eaters and will go after just about everything. However, the bony shad almost always get great results when fishing for sturgeon. The shad are very active on the line, and that appeals to the sturgeon. Hook these oily creatures through the eyes and watch the big sturgeon come flying to you.

    Hot Dogs and Lunch Meat

    • Sturgeon have a taste for fish, but they will also go after processed meats. The salty nature of hot dogs and luncheon meat has led many anglers to use them as the main source of bait when fishing for sturgeon.

    Minnows

    • Sturgeon are primarily bottom feeders, and that means they will go after anything oily with a strong odor. This includes minnows, especially when they are placed on a gang hook. The sturgeon goes after almost all foods with abandon, and that includes minnows.

    Anise

    • Anise is a smelly oil that should be added to any artificial baits used to catch sturgeon. Two or three drops of anise onto any of your plastic lures will attract the sturgeon.

    Crawfish

    • These are more of the sturgeon's favorite things to eat. Crawfish can be found at the bottoms of rivers and lakes, and the sturgeon doesn't care whether they are dead or alive. Remember, the oilier and smellier the better when it comes to finding sturgeon.
