Information on Co2 Paintball Tanks

CO2 is the standard gas used in paintball. Understanding how to use it and what its capabilities are is key to succeeding in the sport.

  1. Function

    • CO2 is the gas that allows paintball guns to fire at the rate of speed needed for competitive play. It is stored in tanks that attach to the marker.

    Types

    • The smallest size tank for recreational paintball use holds 30 grams of CO2 and the largest containers hold about 20 ounces.

    Considerations

    • CO2 runs out as you play paintball and must be eventually refilled. Many sporting goods stores will refill your tanks for a small fee.

    Warning

    • Although rare, CO2 may condense into liquid form occasionally, causing velocity spikes and O- ring deterioration. You can install an anti-siphon tube or expansion chamber/ regulator to prevent this from ever happening.

    Considerations

    • Many players, in addition to carrying extra ammo in the field, will carry an additional small CO2 tank for emergency situations on the field. Take care in installing these on the fly, as careless switches may lead to CO2 leaks.
