How to Train for a Clipper

The Clipper Race is a grueling 11-month, 40,000-mile sailing trek that circumnavigates the globe. It will test every part of your endurance including your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual fabric. In fact, only around 450 people engage in the race compared to the tens of thousands that compete in the most popular running marathons. To train for this race, you will need to build up both your physical and mental toughness as well as your boating skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider signing up for race training such as the course offered through the Clipper's official website.

    • 2

Learn the basics of sailing including the principles of safety, first aid, steering and interacting with your boat. All of the competitors will have the same boat and same amount of money so it is critical to become intimately familiar with the capabilities of your ship.

    • 3

Learn about good seamanship and sea survival techniques. Determine how to best use your ship in emergencies and be able to respond quickly to changes in wind or water.

    • 4

Gain additional knowledge of the intricacies of key racing skills, boat communication and spinnakers. The spinnaker sail drives your speed and direction. It is crucial to have a deep understanding of how to operate this piece of equipment.

    • 5

Acquire the navigational, meteorological and steering capabilities that you will need on the open ocean.

    • 6

Build up your physical endurance through cross-training exercises. Create a program that mixes aerobic activity such as running or spinning with strength training. Ask a physical trainer to advise you on how to develop a program specific to your fitness.

    • 7

Practice regularly with your team for at least several months before the start of the race. Develop a strong cohesion with your partners.

    • 8

Compete at your highest level to win the Clipper with all of the physical, mental and emotional energy you can muster.
