How to Build a Tetherball

Tetherball was a popular game in the 1970s. You could find tetherball courts on playgrounds and in school gyms. The game consists of using a pole secured in the ground with a ball attached to the pole via a rope while two players stand on either side of the pole and hit the ball in opposite directions trying to wrap the rope completely around the pole. You can make your own tetherball if you have the desire to revive this classic game.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a hole in a 12 foot pole 2 inches from the top. Attach the eye hole screw there, twisting until it is as tight as you can make it.

    • 2

Find a large truck or car tire that has a depth of at least 8 inches. Place the tire flat on top of some newspaper or a trash bag to protect the ground beneath it. Mix a large bag of cement in a bucket or whatever container you have available. Once it is completely mixed, pour it into the middle of the tire making sure it is totally filled.

Let the cement set, then place the pole into the center of the tire. Allow the cement to dry overnight.

Purchase a tetherball and complete the process by attaching the rope to the top of your pole via the eye screw. Enjoy many hours of play on your custom-made court.
