What Are Different Things That Parachutes Are Used For?
-
Military
-
The military relies heavily on parachutes. Parachutes are standard equipment for airmen, increasing the odds of surviving a downed plane. These life-saving devices may be worn on the back, or part of the pilot's ejection system. The military also uses them for deployment of personnel and equipment in the field.
Skydiving
-
Skydiving is a sport where people jump out of an airplane flying thousands of feet in the air, and use a parachute to glide safely to the ground. Early competitions occurred in the 1930s, and skydiving became an international sport in 1951.
Parasailing
-
A popular activity at beach destinations, parasailing involves using a boat to pull an individual with a parachute. The parachute lifts up as the boat increases in speed, allowing the individual to "fly" above the boat. When it is time for the individual to come down, the boat slows down and they are gently lowered into the water.
Drogue
-
Drogue parachutes are designed to slow down a rapidly moving object. Drag race drivers use drogue parachutes to help slow their vehicles when the race is complete. They are also used to help airplanes land on runways that would normally be too short for safety.
