How to Shoot a Longbow

The longbow has been used for many centuries. It used to be a military specialty for many armies. Now the longbow is used mainly for recreational purposes and sport shooting. Though the use of a longbow may seem simple, there are many things to remember in the process. Over time, the process can be perfected to attain a skilled and accurate aim. Though the basic instructions are standard for most users, a professional can customize the steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand upright with one foot on each side of the shooting line shoulder length apart. Be comfortable and relaxed. Weight should be distributed evenly between both feet. Maintain this position throughout the shooting motion.

    • 2

Place the nock of the arrow between both nocking points on the bowstring. Place the shaft of the arrow on the top finger of the bow hand.

    • 3

Place the index finger of the drawing hand above the nock of the arrow and the next two fingers under the nock. Curl the fingers around the bowstring at the first joint. Ensure that the fingers are not touching the nock; there should be a slight space. Tuck the thumb into the hand and keep the hand relaxed and flat.

    • 4

Grip the bow at the V. The thumb and index finger of the bow hand should be on each side of the V. Be sure to use the same bow hand grip each time.

    • 5

Raise the bow arm until it is parallel with the ground. Keep the shoulder in the normal position.

    • 6

Draw the string back in a smooth, uniform motion. Pull the string until the drawing hand is touching the jaw. The head should be in the normal position.

    • 7

Aim the tip of the arrow at the target. Depending on the distance and trajectory, the aim position may be above the target.

    • 8

Flex the three fingers on the drawing hand outward in a uniform motion to release the string. All three fingers should release the string at the same time.

    • 9

Maintain the position of the bow until the arrow hits the target.

    • 10

Allow the muscles to relax before attempting the next shot.
