How to Change the Weight on a Bow

The sport of archery dates back thousands of years when they used basic tools and equipment. However, the development and release of compound bows available in different models, shapes, sizes and colors increases the technical setup and tuning of your archery equipment. The draw weight, for example, allows you to change the amount of actual peak weight required to draw back the bow to match your individual body size, strength level and shooting style. You can easily adjust the weight on a bow by using a set of Allen wrenches.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a bow scale to check the current draw weight on the bow.

    • 2

Determine the bow's draw weight adjustment range by checking the label on the inside of the limbs. Most bows have an adjustment range of 10 to 15 pounds. For example, a 70-pound bow can be adjusted between 55 and 70 pounds.

    • 3

Choose your ideal draw weight that you can draw back and hold for 15 to 30 seconds without shaking. Most adults use a draw weight set between 50 and 70 pounds, while youth archers use a draw weight between 15 and 40 pounds.

    • 4

Loosen the pocket locking screws located on the sides of pocket where the limbs attach to the riser. Not every brand or model contains these screws.

    • 5

Turn the limb adjustment bolts clockwise to increase draw weight or counterclockwise to decrease draw weight.

    • 6

Turn both the top and bottom limb adjustment bolts the same number of revolutions to ensure that the tiller stays equal.

    • 7

Tighten the pocket locking screws, if necessary.
