Peep Sight Alternatives

The traditional archery peep sight is a small round piece of metal or plastic set into the strands of a compound bow's string above the nocking point. An archer lines up the peep sight with the bow's sight to aim the bow. Although a peep sight is an effective way of aiming a compound bow, it can be costly to install the string peep into the bow. Some alternative sights are easier to install and just as affective.

  1. Three-Pin Composite Sight

    • One of the most basic archery sights, the three-pin composite sight allows archers a simple solution for ensuring an accurate aim. The sight is composed of three pins, a pin guard and a mounting bracket. Each pin can easily be adjusted up or down as the bow is sighted in. This sight is an affordable investment, and usually can be found for less than $20 at archery or hunting stores.

    Target Sight

    • The target sight is designed to ensure the competitive archer an accurate aim. These sights are some of the most accurate sights available, but because they require careful adjustment, they are generally used by competition archers rather than hunters.

    Bubble Level Sight

    • These sights are more complicated than the three-pin or composite sights, and are unique because they are equipped with a bubble level in addition to pins. Use the bubble level to help you make sure that your bow is perfectly vertical when you are shooting. A perfectly vertical compound bow will prevent your shots from unintentionally landing slightly right or left of your target.

    Fiber-Optic Sight

    • Fiber-optic sights give you the advantage when you're hunting with your compound bow. The unique fiber-optic technology allows the very end of the fiber-optic cable to be illuminated when it is exposed to sunlight. This sighting device allows the end of your pin (or pins) to stand out against dark underbrush and is illuminated even in low light during dusk or dawn.
