DIY Bow Press Ratchet Strap

The ratchet strap is strong and capable of pressing a bow. The strap system is typically used as an emergency press in the field while more stable designs are used in the home or shop. The ratchet strap does apply even pressure on the limbs but special care must be used to prevent the strap from slipping. Slipping causes the strap to rapidly relieve tension and may cause damage to the limbs. Applying too much pressure is also possible and will damage the limbs.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the end hooks on the ratchet strap to the cam slots near the peak of each limb. Hook the straps directly to the opening where the cam is attached to the bow.

    • 2

Adjust the length of the strap by pulling the slack through the ratchet. Adjust the length until the strap is snug and the hooks have slight tension on the bow.

    • 3

Slowly crank the ratchet to add tension on the strap and relieve tension on the bowstring. Stop cranking when the string relaxes and do not add any extra tension with the ratchet. The bare minimum prevents stress and damage to the limbs.

    • 4

Make the intended repairs and replacements on the bowstring and cable without releasing tension from the ratchet strap.

    • 5

Hold the bow and draw the bowstring to place tension on the string and relieve tension from the ratchet strap. Have a friend remove the hooks while you hold the draw position. Slowly lower the string into the resting position without firing the bow.
