Back Tension and Archery Releases

A good understanding of back tension greatly aids archers trying to achieve better aim. Stores sell back tension release training aids for archers interested in this technique, but proper back tension helps with any bow and release.
  1. Back Tension Release

    • Back tension release results naturally from the use of proper relaxation in the pull arm. The hand and wrist of the pull arm appear to twist behind the fingers, indicated by a line made at the hand's base knuckles. The hand recoils upon release. With consistent relaxation, archers reproduce good shots more easily.

    Back Tension Release Aids

    • Back tension training aids assist the archer by automatically and mechanically releasing the string once the body of the aid rotates to the point where the shear drops off the half moon edge, releasing the arrow unexpectedly. Most archers use these aids with a compound bow, but archers can use aids with a recurve or long bow also.

    Warnings

    • Proper back tension relies on a lack of arm tension. Arm tension combined with back tension will still result in uneven releases. This technique requires many hours of practice and patience, particularly when used with back tension release aids.
