Aluminimum Vs. Carbon Arrows

The performance differences between carbon and aluminum arrows are tied largely to the weights of their shafts. However, a newer arrow that combines both of the materials may help to resolve the disadvantages associated with each.
  1. Accuracy

    • The accuracy of the arrow is contingent upon its precision design.

      The arrow's quality lies largely in the precision of the manufacturing process. The detail required to make accurate arrows is easier to achieve with pliable aluminum than it is with carbon.

    Penetration

    • The weight of the aluminum arrow gives it a deeper penetration.

      Because the aluminum arrow is heavier than the carbon, its weight enables it to retain more kinetic energy for a greater distance in flight--it also penetrates the target more deeply.

    Inserts

    • The use of hot glue on carbon arrow inserts can damage the arrow.

      While hot glue is the popular adhesive choice for attaching inserts to arrow tips, carbon shafts are particularly sensitive to heat and can be damaged if a hot glue gun is used to connect their inserts. Epoxy is recommended for carbon arrows.

    Reusability

    • The carbon arrow retains its form when reused.

      Although the pliability of the aluminum arrow makes it more precise when fresh off the manufacturing line, its shaft becomes less straight with the stress incurred from its initial use. The carbon arrow, however, is more durable and retains its form when reused.

    A/C Arrows

    • The slightly more expensive but neutrally-weighted alloy-carbon arrow is the middle-ground for shooters who may not want to relinquish the accuracy of the aluminum or strength of the carbon.
