The Creosote Tire Treatment
For dirt track kart racers, tire performance is a critical factor in winning a race. Racers have experimented with different treatments on tires for many years in efforts to improve the performance of their tires and win races. Creosote, used primarily as a preservative for utility poles and railroad ties, is one of these treatments.
-
Function
-
Creosote and mixtures containing creosote are applied to tires to soften them. These mixtures are often applied with a paintbrush and allowed to dry overnight. Racers feel that a softer tire performs better on a dirt track.
History
-
Racers have been using various liquids and chemicals since the 1950s to gain advantages in races. In addition to creosote, racers have used benzene, kerosene and diesel fuel to soften their tires.
Considerations
-
Creosote is a toxic chemical known to cause cancer and other health problems. Creosote can also diminish the life and safety of tires. Additionally, many race organizations now ban the use of tire treatments and inspect for their use.
