Group 5 Ford Capri Specifications

The Ford Capri was a production car built in the U.K. and Germany from 1969 to 1987. A racing version of the factory-built production car was raced from 1978 to 1983 in the Group 5 German Racing Championship.
  1. Group 5

    • In 1976, the International Sporting Commission introduced group 5 and 6 auto racing, designed for production cars that had been modified while retaining their side-on silhouette. On July 29, 1978, the Ford Capri Mark III made its debut in group 5 racing at Germany's Hockenheim circuit.

    Engine

    • The Ford Capri used in group 5 racing was based around a turbocharged 1427cc Cosworth DBA engine with Garrett intercoolers and a Bosch fuel injector. For the 1978 season, the engine provided 380 brake horsepower and a top speed of 170 mph. By the 1980 season, the engine produced between 450 and 460 bhp.

    Size

    • The group 5 Ford Capri was modified to be significantly larger than the factory-built production 1.3L model Capri. The width of the car was 78 inches, compared to the 66.9 inches in the production model. The racing model used 16-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels.
