Badminton Footwork Training

Footwork is the most important aspect of badminton as it is the foundation of the game. The goal of footwork training is to gain good coverage of the court and being able to get to one spot from another quickly to control the shuttle.
  1. Skills to Practice

    • Footwork training exercises focus on different skills such as the forehand swing, backhand swing, forehand smash and backhand smash among others.

    Practice Area

    • It is best to practice footwork on the badminton court, so that you can use the boundaries of the court and can gauge distance. It is possible, however, to conduct many drills off the court as well.

    Basic Footwork Drill

    • Moving your feet is a side step; try going to the six different parts of the court--two front corners, two back corners and two sides--always leading with your right foot if right-handed. It can be practiced with or without the racquet in hand.

    Risk of Injury

    • Drills can potentially cause injury if not done correctly, so be sure to use proper technique when doing the drills. Follow step-by-step instructions closely and try to get a coach if possible.
