How to Hold a Racquet for a Backhand in Badminton

Whether you are playing a rousing game of backyard badminton or you need to perfect your skills for more serious play, the grips you use on the racquet are an important part of playing the sport. Because you will swing the racquet both forehand and backhand, you will use grips according to the swing. Properly holding a racquet for a backhand in badminton will enable you to deliver a powerful swing.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the racquet with your dominant hand as if you could shake hands with it. Curl the four fingers securely around the handle and place the "V" of your hand (the angle between your thumb and index finger) slightly to the left of the top edge of the handle.

    • 2

Extend your thumb straight on the wide, inside surface of the handle instead of curving it around the racquet. According to the Badminton Bible website, holding the racquet with the thumb curved around the handle for a backhand swing will deliver a weak result.

    • 3

Move the index finger below the level of the thumb, closer to the middle finger.

    • 4

Swing the racquet in a backhand swing and push with your thumb as you swing. The force of the thumb will give your backhand more power.
