common badminton mistakes

If you clicked this article that means you are unsure about your actions on badminton court am i doing it right etc. No one is perfect, everybody makes mistake but not correcting these common mistakes can drastically slow down the process of becoming a good badminton player.

Don’t worry in this article i will be telling you some of the common badminton mistakes and how to increase the speed of learning process by avoiding any useless action.

Common mistakes by beginner badminton singles player

#1 Always focus on the shuttle[ Wrong tactic]

Some of the beginner player are told by coaches that to always focus on the shuttle and not to focus on the racket or body of the opponent to avoid getting deceived.

But i think it is very bad habit , it like you are just watching the weapon of your opponent while fighting.

Observing full upper body movement of opponent helps you to anticipate and also improve your reaction time.

Try to do this in a match on one point just focus on the shuttle and second point obverse full upper body of the player [ not too much 60% on shuttle and 40 % on other movement]

These are the exercises which you can do to improve your
peripheral vision, a term that refers to the part of vision that lies outside the center of sight. The simple way to think of it is to imagine it as the field of vision surrounding objects that you’re able to directly focus on.

Next time when you are playing shot from back of the court try to use your peripheral vision to locate where your opponent is standing while maintaining focus on your shot,
You don’t have to do this every time, if you feel your opponent might be out of balance then this trick comes in handy.

Another drill you can do it is playing 2 versus 1 instead of hitting shot randomly hit shots to alternate player , ask the double pair to keep changing their position from one corner to another this will help you in increasing your peripheral vision.

You will find the difference.

#2 What is the ready position in singles

If you have some knowledge of badminton you will be already familiar with the ready position(it is the position where you stand while your opponent is make his shot).

badminton Ready position

Now the above position is mostly followed by many beginner player hitting the shot and then quickly returning to the center, Reason?

Because all point are equal away from center.

But real badminton match do not work this way, you only have some seconds to reach to shuttle.

So what the perfect ready position?

It depends, if you have lifted the shuttle to left side of court than shift your base to that side of court where you have hit the shuttle and vice-versus.

This is because the distance on straight shot are lesser than cross shots.

Keep one thing do not shift your base position too much to the left side is to try to keep one foot across the central line and one foot on left side so that you are also ready for those cross shots.

#3 Looking to your racket after losing the point

This is the iconic action done by almost every player, after losing the point player start to look at his racket to tell himself and the audience the reason why he lost that shot , “because of uhmm.. racket”

You know the truth but just don’t want to admit this.

Instead of doing this try to analyze why you really gave that point, what needs to be done.

This can also be seen in international match , some player blame flooring, partner, shuttle, racket and even their coach after losing point.

Common mistakes by beginners badminton doubles player

#1 Looking back to know what your partner is doing

This is some serious bad habit it can get you injured.

I don’t know why front court player keep looking back when ever the lift is made but if by chance your partner miss hit the shuttle it can hit in your eyes.

Common badminton mistakes

Always keep looking forward when you are in front court , only look back to your partner when the shuttle is dead.

Now you might be thinking how will I position myself if I don’t know what my partner is going to hit or where he is standing?

This type of understanding will only develop when you practice more with your partner in that case you will become more familiar with his playing style how much is Smash when he is going to drop shot the job of a front Court player is to do interception as much as possible

#2 What to do when shuttle comes in center

When the birdie comes in between two players, neither players swing since they are afraid to clash rackets. The solution to this problem could be that one player calls out that they got the shot

(normally the player that can play a forehand shot will get it since they could have better control in returning the shot).

You can decide before the match than who will be taking middle smash, like i use to do with my partner that whoever is having the forehand side to smash will return the shot.

But this is only a temporary solution instead what you need to do is change the way you stand

common badminton mistakes

Here in this picture you can see that one player is standing to more of his right while the other player is close to the center this postion is maintained when the shuttle is right side of the court.

But if the shuttle would have been on the left side than left side player will be more to his left side and other player will be close to center

This is because shuttle will travel faster in straight line as compared to cross shots.

#3 Buying equipment that don’t match your skills[ applies to both singles and doubles players]

The way you dress give people a hint what kind of person you are ,

Once in tournament i was having a match against a player who was having voltric Z Force II, I got scared , because the first impression i got in my mind for my opponent that he must be a pro

( as he was carrying the racket which international player also uses)

but reality was total different.

Now it is up to you what you want yourself to project in front of other players.

Not waming up properly

It is very important to perform a proper warm up before any type of physical activity. The purpose of a warm up is to prevent injury by increasing the body’s core and muscle temperature. Warm muscles increase the rate of energy production which increases reflexes and lowers the time it takes to contract a muscle. A good warm up should also increase range of motion and mentally prepare you for exercise. read more

Using wrong grip

It is one of the most common mistake which a beginner make , i personally did this in the beginning when when i lacked proper guidance, what i used to do is that my smash grip and neutral forehand grip was same so whenever i used to smash it caused slicing action with racket, lossing all the power of my swing.

I would highly recommend to read this article to avoid this mistake early on in your journey.
