How to Throw a Split Finger Pitch

The split-finger fastball can be a devastating pitch because it combines speed with a sinking movement, making it a difficult ball for batters to hit. This advanced pitch, which is often simply called a "splitter," is easier for pitchers with larger hands to throw because the ball must be held deep between the fingers. The longer a player's fingers, the easier it is to throw. As a result, youths may have a difficult time with the pitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your middle and index fingers on the outside of the part of the seam shaped like a horseshoe.

    • 2

Put your thumb on the back seam and grip the ball firmly.

    • 3

Make a small step with the leg opposite your throwing hand and then pivot on the other leg. Raise your off leg and raise your hands above your head.

    • 4

Stride with your off leg. As the foot of your off leg hits the ground bring your arm forward. Drive forward with the leg on the same side as your throwing arm while extending your arm.

    • 5

Use a throwing motion that results in the palm of your throwing hand aiming directly at the target. Your middle and index fingers should extend upward and your wrist should stay stiff to create the proper movement for the split-finger pitch.
