How to Calculate Basketball Averages

Knowing your players' field goal percentage can help you address which players are doing exceptionally well and which ones need to work on their shooting game. Calculating basketball averages is very easy to do and will allow you to stay on top of your strengths and weaknesses as a team, as well. For the most accurate average results, continue to keep a tally of your players' field goal percentages throughout the entire basketball season.

    • 1

Write down -- each game -- how many shots each player took and how many shots each made.

    • 2

Divide the number of shots made by the number of shots taken. Do this for each player to get an individual average. Then, divide the total number of shots taken by the total number of shots made to get the basketball average for the team.

    • 3

Write down your answer. Move the decimal point over two spaces to get the percentage of shots made during the game.

    • 4

Find each player's free throw average in each game. Repeat Steps 1-3, but this time divide the number of free throws made by the number of free throws taken.

    • 5

Calculate the average. Add up each field goal percentage together, then divide by the total number of percentages to get the average.
