How to Box Out a Taller Player

It is quite obvious that taller players have a distinct advantage in basketball. This is especially true in rebounding situations. However, you can successfully box out a taller player by remembering your fundamentals and following a few simple tips. Tenacity and assertiveness are key factors in your rebounding success. Regardless of how tall the other player may be, keeping your body between him and the basket will go a long way toward reducing his rebounds. Utilizing proper technique is also a great way to draw fouls, which can quickly neutralize the other player's effectiveness.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your box-out as the shooter reaches the apex of his shot.

    • 2

Make contact with the taller player before he has a chance to initiate contact with you. Maintain this contact throughout the rebounding action.

    • 3

Maintain a wide base, with your back straight and knees bent to lower your center of gravity. Your arms should be fully extended and slightly back to create a "wall" in front of the taller player. You are in effect "sitting" on the taller player's lap to hamper his ability to jump.

    • 4

Anticipate where the ball will go, according to where it strikes the basket. Shots that strike the backboard tend to rebound closer to the basket. Shots that strike the rim tend to end up farther away from the basket.

    • 5

Square your body between the taller player and the anticipated path of the rebound.

    • 6

Slide your feet to maintain your box out position as the taller player tries to get around you.

    • 7

Jump with your arms fully extended vertically at the earliest possible moment. The timing depends on your jumping ability, and should be done to rebound the ball as quickly as possible.
