Girls Basketball Dribbling Drills

Figure Eight Dribble
-
The figure eight dribble drill trains girls to gain control of the basketball. It also helps girls gain speed and balance. In this drill, the basketball player stands with her feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent with one foot placed to the front of the body as though taking a step. She dribbles the basketball around one foot. As she dribbles the ball toward the center of her stance, she passes the ball through her legs. As she does so, she switches dribbling hands and dribbles the basketball around the other foot. Make sure the player dribbles the ball just a few inches off the ground.
Dribbling Two Balls
-
Dribbling with two balls is not easy, but once this drill is mastered, handling one ball will be a breeze. This drill teaches coordination and balance. The basketball player starts by dribbling two basketballs while walking across the court. She must make sure that both balls hit the floor at the same time. Next, she staggers the dribble while walking across the basketball court, making sure one ball hits the ground and then the other. The player alternates between dribble methods for two full court lengths, changing up at half court.
Zigzag Dribble
-
The zigzag drill helps a basketball player control her movements across the basketball court while handling the ball. This dribbling drill teaches speed, control and how to make a defensive run down the court. Starting under the basket, the player dribbles the ball with her right hand while moving in a 45-degree angle toward the sideline. Next, she performs a crossover dribble. She switches to the left hand and changes direction, moving toward the left until she reaches half court. The player repeats the process over the entire length of the court, doing five full court lengths of the zigzag drill.
