How to Become a Beach Volleyball Amateur

If you love the beach but aren't one of those who can just lie on a towel for hours, work on your fitness by playing beach volleyball as you soak up the sun. Aside from staying fit and basking under the sunshine, amateur volleyball players can enjoy the competitiveness and camaraderie of an Olympic sport. The sport requires skills such as agility, speed, teamwork and hand-eye coordination. Sign up for amateur tournaments and develop your beach volleyball prowess.

Practice playing in public beach volleyball courts. Aside from gaining experience, this is also an effective way to socialize, network and meet like-minded players. Beach volleyball courts are popular throughout the West Coast. Visit places such as Santa Monica, Torrance Beach, Sunset Beach, Mission Beach at San Diego, Laguna Beach and more. Beach volleyball courts are also available on the East Coast such as Dorchester Beach Volleyball Park in Ocean City, Maryland and Stevens Beach Volleyball Court in Hoboken, New Jersey.

If you live away from the beach, you can still practice by accessing indoor sand volleyball courts. For example, the Sports Center at Chelsea Pier in New York City has an indoor sand volleyball court. Check the city parks in your locality for sand volleyball courts.

Improve your skills by signing up for a beach volleyball training camp or clinic. Search for sessions near your beach and reserve a spot. If you live away from the beach, sign up for a membership or access to sports facilities that offer indoor sand volleyball courts. Inquire about any available teams and/or training programs at the facilities. Sessions may last for a couple of weeks or months and have professional coaches and players as instructors. Schedules may include two practices daily for morning and afternoon with one coach for every court. Some camps have a maximum number of participants, so sign up early.
