How to Replace a Bent Freehub
When your freehub is bent, trouble is forthcoming. A wobbly rear wheel can prove to be quite dangerous, especially if you're attempting to shift to a harder or easier gear when going downhill or uphill. If you have a few bike tools, as well as some common garage tools, and replacement parts, there are a few quick steps to take out the bent freehub and put in a brand new one. Follow along and get back on the road in no time.
Things You'll Need
- 2 5 mm Allen keys

1
Remove your rear wheel from the bike frame. You'll want to have plenty of room around you as you work, so make certain the rest of your bike is off to the side and out of the way.
-
2
Place both of your 5 mm wrenches in either end of the rear hub to remove the end cap. When turning, apply more leverage to the drive side -- where the cassette sits -- to get the end cap off.
-
3
Pull off the end cap by hand and set it aside. Take the replacement free hub and slide it back on, twisting counterclockwise as it settles against the hub.
-
4
Replace the end cap and tighten both sides with your two 5 mm wrenches. Make certain you tighten securely, but not aggressively tight.
