How to Calculate Speed Per Mile
Speed can be calculated relative to time or distance. Speed for drivers is in miles per hour because people prefer to calculate how long it will take to go from point A to point B. Runners and cyclists usually prefer to use speed per mile because races have fixed lengths. Speed per mile is also used as a reference for performance during race or during training. Beside straight recording of the time between two points, you can calculate speed per mile from the miles per hour speed.
Instructions
-
Straight recording
-
1
Plan the route you will be taking and take two markers and space them one mile apart.
-
2
Go at your own pace until you are comfortable it is the speed you want to measure.
-
3
Start your chronometer when you pass in front of the first marker.
-
4
Stop it when you pass in front of the second marker to know your speed per mile.
Conversion
-
5
Take your speed in miles per hour.
-
6
Divide that number by 60 to get your speed in minute per mile.
-
7
If you speed is 7 mph, you are going at 60/7 = 8.5 = 8 minutes and 30 seconds.
