1
Place the bicycle in a repair stand or turn the bicycle upside down to elevate the wheel in question off the ground. If turning the bicycle upside down, position the handlebars evenly so that the bicycle is balanced. Observe the bend in the tire and the portion of rim directly below it. One or more spokes opposite the bend may have become loose.
-
2
Pluck the center of each spoke in the vicinity opposite the bend. Listen for spokes that offer a lower pitch. These spokes are looser than the others.
-
3
Place a drop of mineral oil on both ends of the nipple of each loose spoke. A narrow, oblong nut that secures the spoke to the rim, the nipple is attached at one end to the rim and the other to the spoke. Mineral oil allows the nipple to turn freely when adjusted.
-
4
Wrap a spoke wrench around the nipple. Turn the wrench counterclockwise, increasing tension on the spoke. Tighten the spoke until it sounds identical to other spokes when plucked.
-
5
Observe the bend in the tire and rim. Gradually, as spoke tension is restored to loose spokes, the section of wheel will even out. Used a fixed point on the bike, such as one of the brake pads, to measure progress. As you turn the wheel, each section of the wheel should pass the fixed point evenly.
