Instructions

1
Place the bicycle upside down on a well-lit, elevated work surface.
-
2
Brush away visible dirt and debris on the chain link with an old toothbrush.
-
3
Shift the bike gears down to the smallest front and rear cogs.
-
4
Rotate the bike’s crank to move the chain links through the bike’s derailleur in a reverse motion.
-
5
Watch the chain links as they come across the bike’s lower derailleur pulley. Stiff chain links will jump over the pulley while smooth chain links will glide over it with ease.
-
6
Grasp the stiff chain link and gently twist it from side to side to loosen it. If the chain link remains stiff, place the link in a chain tool and thread the pin section of the tool against the chain pin. Gently twist the pin clockwise to loosen the link.
-
7
Apply a lubricating agent to the chain and rotate the bike’s crank forward and backward. Watch to see if any additional stiff chain links jump the pulley and to ensure the loosened links are gliding across it with ease.
