How to Clip Into SPD Pedals

The world of bicycle pedals offers an array of choices. Shimano's SPD pedal features a binding that attaches the foot to the pedal's surface. The binding requires the use of cycling-specific shoes outfitted with an SPD-compatible cleat. Clipping into these pedals involves joining the cleat effectively with the pedal binding. Employing the proper technique for this procedure helps ensure safe use of the pedal and accident-free cycling.

Instructions

    • 1

Straddle your bicycle. Keep one hand on the brake lever to prevent the bike from rolling forward as you clip into your SPD pedals.

    • 2

Choose which foot to keep on the ground and which foot to clip into the pedal first. The foot on the ground provides support and balance while the second foot engages the pedal.

    • 3

Insert the tip of the cleat into the pedal binding. Push down with the heal to fully engage the pedal. Expect a "snap" as the cleat and binding engage.

    • 4

Rotate your pedal-bound foot to the 12 o'clock position. Placing the foot here positions it to effectively rotate the pedal crank forward.

    • 5

Release the brake and roll the pedal-bound foot forward. As the empty pedal arrives at the top of the rotation cease pedaling long enough to clip the second foot into the empty pedal.
