How to Refill Helium Filled Tires
At times alternative gases, such as nitrogen and helium, are used to fill tires. In the case of helium the idea is that as helium-filled balloons are lighter than air, the tires may also be lighter than the standard tires. The problem with using alternative gases lies in the fact that they are less available, with no helium pumps available at a local service station or other such location. In particular, as seen in balloons, helium dissipates quickly through rubber surfaces, so tires would have to be refilled often.
Things You'll Need
- Helium tank
- Gas hose
- Pressure gauge
- Rubber tire
Instructions

-
1
Place the tank in an open, well ventilated place and make sure that the tank is secure and not in danger of being knocked over.
-
2
Attach the gas hose to the valve of the tank. Open the valve to check the pressure from the tank.
-
3
Unscrew the plastic cap from the tire valve.
-
4
Attach the tire valve to the end of the gas hose.
-
5
Open the tank valve to inflate the tire.
-
6
Check the tire with the pressure gauge to keep from over-inflating the tire. Close the tank valve and screw the plastic cap back onto the tire valve once the tire is filled.
