How to Balance Bicycle Tires

The balance of bicycle wheels has a significant influence on a bike's handling. With the innovation of tangential spokes, the wheel distributes pressure more effectively, allowing it to support more weight. Tangential spokes also allow the wheel to be adjusted precisely, ensuring a smooth ride. You can balance your bicycle's tires by checking the spokes; observing how the brake pads make contact with the wheels indicates which spokes need to be adjusted. You can save time and money by performing this maintenance yourself.

Instructions

Turn the bicycle upside down so it is securely balanced, with the wheels in the air. This will allow for easy access to the wheel spokes. Inspect the front wheel first; check the spokes to see if there are spokes that are much looser than the rest. Loose spokes can cause the wheel to wobble.

Use your hand to spin the front tire and begin applying the brake gradually. Observe the rim of the wheel and the brake pad. Pick out any spots on the rim where the brake touches the rim on only one side. Any such spot indicates the spoke is too loose on the side where the brake does not touch. Mark these spots with a felt-tip pen or chalk.

Use a spoke wrench to tighten any loose spokes. Secure the spoke wrench around the nipple of the spoke and turn it clockwise (use no more than a half-turn at a time). When tightening spokes, make small adjustments and check often if the brake touches the rim on both sides. The tire is balanced when the brake pad touches the rim evenly along the entire wheel.

Repeat this process for the rear wheel until all of the spokes are evenly tightened and the brake pad touches the rim evenly along the entire wheel.
