How to Lock a Recumbent Trike

Choosing the right lock to secure your bike requires an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of lock. Furthermore, recumbent bike owners have an additional problem--the bike's low-to-the-ground and extra long frame. This unusual shape is difficult to use with standard bike stands and padlocks. Thus, the best type of lock to use is one that is long and capable of reaching the bike's frame. The U-lock fits this description perfectly. This U-shaped lock is long enough to fit through the front wheel and frame, providing maximum protection against theft and vandalism.

Instructions

Insert your front wheel first through the bike rack. This means you'll be securing your front wheel to the bike rack and not your rear wheel. This is a more secure position than locking your rear tire since your rear tire is attached to the chain. This makes the rear tire difficult to steal. The front tire, on the other hand, is usually only bolted to the frame and can be removed with a wrench. Securing the front tire may make an opportunistic thief look elsewhere.

Open the U-lock and slip the lock around the bike stand, through the front tire and through at least one part of the frame.

    • 3

Lock the U-lock with your key and give your bike another look to make sure both the tire and the frame are locked to the bike frame. Your recumbent bike can be easily stolen if only the front tire is locked. Thieves often remove the front tire and steal the rest of the bike. Locking the tire and the frame removes this option.

Tug lightly on your bike to quickly see if the U-lock is in the locked position. This is an extra precaution you should take just to verify that your recumbent bike is secure.
