How to Release a Fingertip Grip Ball

Once you have started to consistently bowl an average of about 140, move beyond the conventional grip and experiment with the fingertip grip. This is a more difficult grip to master, but if you perform it correctly you may earn more strikes. The weight of the ball will transfer differently as you release it, which creates more revolutions as the ball rolls down the lane. This means that when the ball hits the pins, the pin action increases, which causes other pins to fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain the proper grip and hand position throughout the swing to control your release. Keep your fingers and thumb lying flat, with the fingers squeezed toward the thumb. Keep your thumb inserted into the hole all the way, but keep your fingers inserted only to the first knuckle.

    • 2

Maintain the least amount of pressure needed to hold the ball properly with your fingers. Avoid increasing the amount of pressure at the release point, because this can negatively impact your release.

    • 3

Avoid pressing with your thumb, which can interfere with your ability to release the ball smoothly.

    • 4

Approach the point of release with your thumb exiting the hole before the fingers.

    • 5

Aim the ball with your fingers and release it.
