The Proper Candlepin Bowling Technique

Candlepin bowling is a variation of regular ten-pin bowling. It uses a light ball that can be held in the palm of your hand and does not have holes. The pins are much thinner and cynlindrical in shape in comparison to ten-pin bowling. Though the objective of the game is the same, to knock down as many pins as possible, the technique for throwing a candlepin bowling ball is much different. Perfecting the technique requires practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Find your starting position on the approach by taking three normal strides away from the foul line. Begin your throw here.

    • 2

Grip the ball in whichever hand is most comfortable. Usually you will use the hand that you write with. If you have ever bowled ten pin, use the same hand as you bowl with for that version of the game. All five fingers should make contact with the ball, but the ball should not be touching your palm. You want the ball to rest on the fingers.

    • 3

Hold the ball at shoulder level with your elbow bent. Your thumb should be nearest to your body, and the other fingers should be facing the pins.

    • 4

Walk three paces towards the foul line while powering the ball. To power the ball is to lower it, swing your arm behind you and pull your arm forward.

    • 5

Release the ball onto the alley when your arm is fully extended downward. Allow your arm to continue using its momentum as it rises forward. This is called a follow-through. Do not step over the foul line as this will negate the pins your ball hits in this turn.
